Spring is Here

Dr. Alexander: Hi I’m Dr. Daniel Alexander with the Finger Lakes Bone & Joint Center. It’s almost spring and a lot of people are asking about exercise. The first thing we tell everybody is to go slow. Make sure you consult your physician first to make sure it’s safe. You want to start slow and build from a good solid base. Make sure you hydrate well. You want to exercise three to four times a week, twenty to thirty minutes at a time and then increase gradually. The most important thing you can do for your joints is weight-bearing exercise and strengthening. Weight reduction really takes a lot of pressure off of the joints. Think of it this way: for every pound you lose you take three pounds off of your knee, hip or back. Think about it; it’s good for the body.
